As first reported by Warchant and confirmed by Tomahawk Nation on Thursday night, Florida State wide receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator Lawrence Dawsey will not retain his titles in 2018, however he may remain at FSU in a different role.
This past season was Dawsey’s 11th at Florida State, all as wide receivers coach. In that time, the Seminoles only had two receivers drafted into the NFL, Kelvin Benjamin and Rashad Greene.
As a Tampa recruiter, head coach Willie Taggart was more than likely aware of Dawsey’s struggles in that area. In fact, former Tampa blue-chip receiver Warren Thompson committed to Oregon over the Seminoles. With Taggart now at FSU, Thompson decommitted and is widely thought to be bound for Florida State.
Dawsey still has a lot of value as a mentor and would be valuable if he remained at the school in some capacity. His son, Lawrence Dawsey Jr., is currently a redshirt freshman on the FSU football team.
This opens the door for FSU alum and current Miami wide receivers coach Ron Dugans to join the staff. His name has been mentioned for quite some time and the Tallahassee native declined to comment regarding the rumors when asked recently.
