Dalvin Cook’s freshman FSU rushing record within reach of Cam Akers

History in Shreveport?

NCAA Football: UL Monroe at Florida State Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

Running back Cam Akers began his Florida State career on the largest of stages, turning heads against Alabama in the Seminoles’ 2017 opener in Atlanta. He’ll have another national showcase with which to surpass the great Dalvin Cook as the most productive freshman rusher in FSU history.

The ’Noles now know their bowl destination and opponent, and while FSU’s homework has most certainly begun on its bowl foe, one thing has been apparent since Florida State smoked Louisiana-Monroe to close out the 2017 regular season: Akers has a very real shot at the record books.

In 2014, Cook set a new program record by recording 1,008 rushing yards as a frosh. Currently, Akers has 931 yards on the ground after a 117-yard effort against ULM. That leaves a very manageable 78 for him to vault Cook. But Southern Miss won’t exactly be lying down— only 27 of 130 FBS teams have allowed fewer rushing yards per game this season than USM.
