Is this finally the year a FSU running back brings the trophy to Tallahassee?

No Florida State running back has ever won the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation’s top running back. But this year, a couple of players from the Seminoles’ loaded backfield have made the initial watch list to do so.

Jacques Patrick picks up his second straight preseason Walker Award nomination, as he returns to Tallahassee for his senior year. In 2017 he rushed for 748 yards and seven touchdowns on 134 carries. He recorded nine starts and missed two games due to injury.

Earlier this week, sophomore running back Cam Akers was named to the 2018 Maxwell Award Watch List, a prize bestowed upon the nation’s top player. And now Akers has his second Watch List nomination of 2018 with the Doak Walker nod.

Akers was Florida State’s leading rusher in 2017, averaging 5.3 yards per carry and 78.8 yards per game. He rushed for a total of 1,024 yards in 2017, breaking the previous FSU freshman rushing record that was held by Dalvin Cook.

It is important to point out that following Dalvin Cook’s breakout true freshman season, he was left out of the Doak Walker Award Watch List altogether.
