According to a tweet from Bruce Feldman, Mike Norvell is expected to fill out his coaching staff at Florida State, completing his on-field hires by adding running backs coach David Johnson away from Tennessee, where Johnson held the same position. This hire took a little longer than the rest of the staff because the Volunteers’ season just ended with a win against the Indiana Hoosiers in the Gator Bowl.
This was Johnson’s second year in Knoxville; before that, he was with Norvell at Memphis as the Tigers’ wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. At Memphis, Johnson coached Anthony Miller, a consensus All-American WR.
Before that, Johnson coached RBs and TEs at Tulane from 2012-2015 after moving to the collegiate ranks from New Orleans’ St. Augustine High School, where he coached NFL stars Leonard Fournette and Tyrann Mathieu in his hometown. Johnson also played ball, starring as a receiver at Nicholls State from 1991-1993.
Johnson’s salary at UT was $500,000.
