Each week before Florida State home football games, a brand new edition of SodTalk is released on Seminoles.com. SodTalk is an interview with a former FSU football legend, reflecting on their career and discussing some of the memorable “sod games” during their time at Florida State.
Normally held outside the Florida State Sod Cemetery on gamedays, SodTalk was moved to an online format this season due to the pandemic.
This week, Doug Mannheimer is joined by a man who needs no introduction: legendary former FSU head coach Bobby Bowden. A beloved figure in Tallahassee, Bowden posted an incredible 316-97-4 record with 2 National Championships during his 34-year career.
A major figure in the history of collegiate sports, Bowden took over an FSU program that was an afterthought nationally and 4-29 combined the three seasons before his hire. Bowden quickly turned around Florida State (they went 11-1 in just his fourth season) and almost immediately the Noles were among the class of college football for the next quarter-century.
As anyone who follows Florida State football knows, Bowden orchestrated one of the greatest Dynasties in the history of organized team sports. Florida State finished each year as a top-five team in 14 consecutive seasons from 1987-2000. Simply put, Bowden has accomplished and won much more than can be summarized quickly in a short article.
