Florida State football is coming off their worst loss in program history, a 20-17 last-second loss to Jacksonville State, as they head into Wake Forest game week. The Seminoles will head to Wake Forest with an 0-2 record. FSU’s game in Winston-Salem will be its first road game and first ACC matchup season.
Monday morning, Mike Norvell held his weekly press conference to review the Jacksonville State loss and look ahead to Wake Forest. Here’s some of what he said:
“In the moment, in the situation, our guys did not respond the way that we were hopeful of in that situation being up 10 with 4:50 left in the game. I had all confidence that we were going to be able to finish the game and get the win.”
“Offensively, we were never able to get in rhythm. I thought there were some good things we did in the run game at times. Really had no explosiveness in the offense. Inconsistent in the passing game, too many drops... Need to create separation on the perimeter.”
“Offensively, our third and fourth situations were poor. You look at the short yardage, that’s something we have to be better at. We’ve got to be able to extend drives. Third and fourth down combined, we were 31% conversion, which is nowhere near our standard of how we want to operate.”
“We had nine penalties for 100 yards in the second half. That is extremely challenging to finish games when you have that type of result.”
“Defensively, I thought there were just three drives. The one drive in the first half where they did execute down the field and scored and then the last two drives... I thought our guys played hard, I thought our defensive front gave really good effort. In the defensive backfield, we missed some 1-on-1 opportunities.”
“As a coaching staff, we’ve got to continue to make sure that we’re doing our part. You don’t always have to have the play call that is going to make the difference. We’re continuing to evaluate all aspects of what we’re doing”
“I thought the attitude yesterday was appropriate. Guys were extremely disappointed, but they also came in and understood that work is necessary. That’s what we’re going to do, that’s all I know, to go to work and get better”
“We’ve played two games, we’ve lost both games on the last play of the game. One was highly ranked, one was a smaller school. At the end of the day, they made the plays necessary and we have not played to the level that I believe we’re capable of. We got to get that fixed as we start ACC play this week going on the road and our guys know the work that’s ahead.”
