Florida State football, recruiting news: Will it be FSU or LSU for 5-star DT Marvin Wilson?

Your daily dose of football, recruiting, and alumni news.

Five-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson

Recruiting

Need a place to find all of Tomahawk Nation’s National Signing Day content over the next few days? Check our convenient story stream. Currently, you can find scouting reports for each of Florida State’s seven early enrollees already in Tallahassee.

There are only two five-star defensive tackles in the 2017 recruiting class and both remain uncommitted on National Signing Day eve. What makes them such elite recruits and where does SB Nation Recruiting guru Bud Elliott see them both, one of whom, Marvin Wilson, is a Florida State target, landing on Wednesday?

LSU folks are feeling good about Wilson since the Tigers were tied at the top with FSU, yet Wilson still had his LSU visit remaining, and had already taken his trip to Tallahassee. But, Florida State’s recruits have been the most vocal recruiters and have the Seminoles squarely in the mix. Neither the Tigers nor the Seminoles would surprise me here. I definitely think FSU has a greater shot than many.

Even with this year’s NSD so close, it’s always time to plan for the future as well. As such, Florida State offered 2019 offensive lineman Grant Carroll from Minneapolis (Min) Edina on Monday.

Richard Johnson of SB Nation takes a fascinating look inside recruiting boards and how they are constructed.

Some ESPN ACC writers took to Twitter to share a very impressive fact about Jimbo Fisher and put it into national perspective.

Football

David Hale of ESPN includes one Florida State player on his list of 2016 ACC signees that he expects to see break out in 2017.

Levonta Taylor, Florida State

It’s not that we didn’t see any of the No. 5 overall recruit in last year’s class. He got work at corner, safety, nickel, even a bit at linebacker. Two things he didn’t get, however, were stability and a full-time job. That should materialize in 2017, particularly with star corner Marquez White now gone.

Speaking of Hale, he also put into perspective how well Florida State and Clemson have done after getting little from so many key contributors at the top of their 2013 recruiting classes.

Alumni

After weeks of waiting, former Florida State receiver Kermit Whitfield received his NFL combine invite and has the chance to post what could be one of the fastest 40 times in combine history.

Former Seminole Dalvin Cook remains in the top ten of Dan Kadar’s latest NFL mock draft.

8. Carolina Panthers: Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State

The past few mock drafts have had the Panthers getting Fournette. Even with him gone, they don’t miss out on much by taking Cook. The Panthers need impact at skill positions, and Cook does the job as a runner and pass catcher.

Former FSU basketball player Toney Douglas got another chance to earn a full-time spot on an NBA roster when the Memphis Grizzlies re-signed him to a 10-day deal.

Other Sports

An 0-2 week may have caused the Florida State basketball team to plummet down the rankings but it didn’t cause too much harm to the Seminoles’ RPI.
