There are always surprises during any signing period. But then there are those that really seem to come from nowhere. Or, at least, from another hemisphere.
Enter Alex Mastromanno (6’3, 215), whose name I’m literally learning to spell as I write this. How out of left field is this guy? The Melbourne product’s Twitter account was just created, and his lone tweet announced his commitment to FSU.
I’ve committed and signed with @fsufootball on a full scholarship to study and play football. Thank you to coach Norvell and all the staff at Florida State University for this opportunity. Big thanks to @prokickaustralia and @Johnnypka for everything and always believing in me. pic.twitter.com/ya9P1Ehjfu

It looks like Mastromanno’s roots are in Aussie rules football, where he went by “The Mastro,” but he also ran track and played tennis, per FSU. Our featured image was taken during a photo session at Prokick Australia, an outfit that helps Aussie players prepare to join US teams to play American football. It was submitted through Getty Images in May, so Mastromanno has been preparring to come stateside since at least then. Prior to this signing, the lone punter on the Seminoles’ roster was Tommy Martin, a walk-on, so this is a wise signing. And Aussie punters have been rather en vogue of late.
Planting his spear all the way from Australia, Alex Mastromanno is a member of the #NoleFam. pic.twitter.com/j25gbjfM4y
