TN recently caught up with Altmyer to learn more:
Could you just take us through the timeline of your FSU recruitment. We know you received an offer on 1/25 and committed on 2/3—would you mind filling in the blanks?
“I was super excited to get down to Tallahassee for a visit and excited about Coach Norvell and Coach (Kenny) Dillingham (OC) being there. In between those dates my main thoughts [were] ‘could I find another place that would treat me like these guys would, and a spot where I can come in and compete right away,’ and FSU was a spot I could see myself doing that. I didn’t want to lose that opportunity to another kid [committing first].”
What’s Coach Norvell like?
“Coach Norvell is so, so passionate, and you see it in how he walks, talks, coaches, and recruits.”
What about Coach Dillingham?
“Coach Dillingham is very humorous, intelligent, and a driven winner.”
How much have you spoken to the coaches since committing, and what are they telling you?
“I speak to them pretty often via FaceTime or text message. We just have conversations about what’s going on right now in this world and how each of us are doing.”
As the QB, do you feel like you’re the leader of the class? Are the coaches asking you to help them recruit other guys?
“I definitely feel like the leader. Coach keeps me updated on guys he wants me to contact.”
(Not going to give away “state secrets,” but all names we’ve mentioned on TN)
What’s your pitch to other recruits?
“‘Florida State is a national contender—you’ve seen it in the past, and it’s only a matter of time before it’ll be back and competing [for] conference and national titles. Why not become a part of the rebuild to something special?’”
How would you describe your game?
“I go into every game as prepared as I can be. I believe the best ability a QB can have is confidence. I feel like I’m very confident in a game. The game [has] slowed down for me, [as] I’ve been playing 6A Mississippi football since I was a freshman. I’m a student of the game, constantly learning, [and I’m] willing to be coached.”
Who do you model your game after?
“I model my game after Joe Burrow—just playing with pure confidence and doing my job.”
What are your biggest strengths/weaknesses?
“My release is very fast. I have good pocket-presence and mobility. I can make plays with my feet and arm. I think I’m the best quarterback in the nation, but just haven’t [had] national [exposure]. I think I can get better at vocally leading, [and] I am getting better.”
What are you interested in studying in college and why?
“I’m undecided as of now. Maybe biology or some branch of history. I really draw towards medicine and history.”
