Clay Wedin calls Florida State a “sleeping giant”

Priority target.

Clay Wedin (Twitter)

Clay Wedin is a 6’6 285 pound offensive tackle prospect from Valrico, FL.

The Class of 2023 prospect attends Carrollwood Day School.

Although rising sophomores are ranked by the major sites, I expect Wedin to eventually be a blue-chip, as he already boasts offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide, Arizona State Sun Devils, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Miami-Florida Hurricanes, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Penn State Nittany Lions, South Carolina Gamecocks, Tennessee Volunteers, USC Trojans, and West Virginia Mountaineers, among others.

Florida State offered in late January:

Wedin then visited Tallahassee in early February:

TN recently caught up with the talented offensive tackle to learn more:

What coach(es) did you speak to when getting the FSU offer?

“Coach Thomsen and Coach Norvell.”

What was that conversation like?

“It was a brief conversation about how they’re going to develop and change the culture. It’s hard to remember specifics since I was very excited.”

Take us through your visit to Tallahassee, if you don’t mind.

It’s been awhile, but I remember first meeting all the staff and then going to the locker room for pictures.

Then we went around the facility to see the training area, got taped/measured and weighed, saw the weight room where I met with Coach Storms and the other trainers—that was a highlight for me because he was really cool, and I was lucky enough to be able to talk with them for a quite awhile. I actually got left, as I did not notice the group left for another area! So at some point Coach McMillan came and found me and my dad, and I went up and talked with Coach Norvell a bit. After that I spoke to Coach Atkins some more.

Really just a good initial whirlwind tour to meet some staff and see some of the facilities.

When you hear the name Florida State, what comes to mind?

“A blue blood school with a lot of tradition that might just be a sleeping giant.”

How do you describe your style of play?

“Flexible, heavy-handed, and quick-footed.”

What player(s) do you look up to/model your game after?

“I try to model my game as a mix of Bob Brown and Tyron Smith—I hold both of those players in the highest regard.”

You talking about THIS Bob Brown?

“Absolutely—I love that he was just flat out mean and a dominator.”

That’s impressive—you’re obviously a student of the game.

“I really enjoy learning about offensive line legends, and found out about him researching old school lineman.”

What do you like to do for fun outside of football?

“I like to hunt, fish, play pickup basketball, and of course lifting.”

What’s a fun/unique thing about you people might not know?

“Not many people know I lived in Washington state and Mississippi before moving to FL (military family).”

What schools are you planning to visit when the Dead Period ends?

“Definitely LSU, Auburn, Tennessee ASAP, but I do plan to make it out west for ASU and USC. Those are some schools I haven’t visited yet, but would like to see. I do plan on hitting the FL schools, as well, because they’re so much easier for us to visit. I really was looking forward to catching some FSU practices this spring to see how the coaches’ style is.”

What are the biggest things you’re looking for in a school?

“Culture, fit, and strong support staff for everything from football to recovery to academics. It’s hard right now to know who really is going to want me on their team in a couple years, so it’s hard to really devote myself into just a few things.”
