FSU baseball vs. Southern Miss: Preview, how-to-watch, game thread

Parker Messick on the mound for game one in Oxford.

FSU sports information

Florida State baseball (30-22, 20-16 ACC) will begin their NCAA Tournament run today. Today’s game will make it 43 straight appearances in the NCAAT for FSU and Mike Martin Jr.’s first as a head coach. Through 69 games, Martin is 42-27. This ios the 58th overall time Florida State has been to a regional. The Seminoles’ 58 all-time appearances trail only Texas for the most in the CWS-era.

The Seminoles are 5-5 in their last 10 games. Away from Dick Howser, the ‘Noles are 12-9 this season. FSU won four of six away series. Against the rest of the field, FSU is 48-13 all-time. The Seminoles will take on two-seed Southern Miss today. For more on the Golden Eagles, you can read our in depth-break down of USM here:

The ‘Noles will need to win three consecutive games or go 4-1 to advance this week. FSU hasn’t won three consecutive games since their seven-game win streak in March, which included a 4-0 week against UF and Miami. Florida State will be led into Oxford by the ACC Player of the Year. Matheu Nelson is still the nation’s leader in home runs with 22. Nelson also leads the Seminoles with a .332 average. Tyler Martin enters the regional with a 13-game on-base streak. He’s 12th in the nation with 46 walks.

Florida State is the away team today at Swayze Field. Here are today’s probables:

Friday 6/4, 3:00 PM vs. Southern Miss

Probable Starters: LHP Parker Messick (3.32 ERA, 84.0 IP) vs. RHP Hunter Stanley (2.42 ERA, 93 IP)

How to watch: ESPNU

Mike Martin Jr. announced yesterday that he would start his ace in game one. After two weeks away from the ace role due to a minor back injury, Parker Messick is getting the game one start for the Seminoles. Messick was the ACC Pitcher of the Year after compiling a 2.82 ERA in 12 ACC starts. The southpaw is built for the big moments. He showed it against Texas Tech and Florida as FSU’s closer during his true freshman season. Messick has shown it on every Friday night start in ACC play. In Messick’s 12 Friday starts against ACC teams, FSU was 8-3. Messick is ninth in the country with 121 strikeouts.
