Seminoles looking to take home a Sunshine Slam title in Daytona Beach

Florida State Seminoles basketball will face off against the squad’s first ranked opponent of the season today in Daytona Beach, taking on the No. 18 Colorado Buffaloes in the Sunshine Slam championship game.

FSU bounced back from its blowout loss to Florida last week with an 83-75 victory over the UNLV Runn’ Rebels on Monday that saw a major game from transfer Jamir Watkins who put up 19 points and eight assists. According to FSU Sports Info, Florida State’s starting five (Watkins, Cam Corhen, Baba Miller, Jalen Warley, and Darin Green Jr.) shot a combined .629 from the field (22 of 35) as the Seminoles shot a season-high .627 from the field as a team in their victory over UNLV.

Colorado battled with Richmond last night after the Seminoles’ win, outlasting the Spiders in a back-and-forth 64-59 battle in which the Buffaloes saw season lows in scoring, field goal percentage and 3-pointers made.

According to DraftKings, Florida State is a five-point underdog to Colorado.

FLORIDA STATE VS. COLORADO – CONNECTIONS

Florida State will play Colorado in the championship round of the Sunshine Slam at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., on November 21, 2023. Florida State holds a 1-0 advantage in a series that includes one game in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles defeated the Buffaloes, 71-53, at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2021 NCAA Tournament was played entirely in Indianapolis because of the COVID-19 World Pandemic. Tad Boyle is in his 14th season as the Buffaloes’ head coach and is the winningest coach in Colorado history. Boyle is 0-2 all-time against Florida State – with both games coming in the postseason. Boyle was an assistant coach at Wichita State when the Tim Pickett-led Seminoles defeated the Shockers, 91-84, in double overtime in the first round of the NIT on March 17, 2004 at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita. Boyle was then the head coach at Colorado when the Seminoles defeated the Buffaloes in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Bill Grier, an assistant on Boyle’s current staff, was an assistant coach on Colorado’s staff during the 2021 NCAA Tournament. He is 0-1 during his career against the Seminoles. Mike Rohn, also a current Colorado assistant coach, was also an assistant coach on Colorado’s 2021 NCAA Tournament team who fell to the Seminoles in Indianapolis. Colorado assistant Rick Ray has extensive coaching history against Florida State during stops at Clemson (2-2 as a Tiger assistant in two years, 2010-12) and Mississippi State (1-1 as a Bulldog assistant in 2014-15 and 2015-16). Ray is 3-3 all-time on the coaching sidelines against Florida State. Colorado Head Football Coach Deion Sanders is a Seminole.

FLORIDA STATE AGAINST NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS

Florida State enters Tuesday’s game against No. 18/21 ranked Colorado with 16 victories over nationally ranked opponents since the start of the 2018-19 season. The Seminoles won a school-record seven games against nationally ranked opponents during the 2016-17 season and have defeated a school-record 59 nationally ranked opponents under head coach Leonard Hamilton. Included in the list of victories over nationally ranked teams since the beginning of the 2018-19 season is a 79-78 overtime win over Duke on January 18, 2022.

SEMINOLES FIRST; WARLEY THIRD IN THE ACC IN STEALS

Florida State enters Tuesday’s game against Colorado as the ACC team leader in steals with a 10.50 steals per game average. The Seminoles totaled eight steals in Monday’s victory over UNLV in the semifinals of the Sunshine Slam and are the only team currently averaging in double figure steals (10.5 spg). Florida State totaled a season-high 13 steals against Central Michigan (Nov.13) and 12 against Florida and have earned 42 steals in their first four games of the season. Warley, with 11 steals and a 2.8 steals per game average, is ranked third in the ACC – behind only Ryan Dunn of Virginia (15 steals, 3.0 spg) and Maliq Brown of Syracuse (12 steals, 3.0 spg).

FLORIDA STATE IN TOURNAMENTS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA

Florida State won their championship of the Emerald Coast Classic with victories over Chicago State, Tennessee, and Purdue to begin the 2019-20 season. The Seminoles have played for the championship of both the AdvoCare Invitational (2018) and the Emerald Coast Classic (won the championship with a win over Purdue) in 2019 since the beginning of the 2018-19 season.

SEMINOLES NEAR 50 PERCENT FROM THE FIELD WITH BETTER THAN 60 PERCENT PERFORMANCE AGAINST UNLV

Florida State’s starting five (Jamir Watkins, Cam Corhen, Baba Miller, Jalen Warley, and Darin Green Jr.) shot a combined .629 from the field (22 of 35) as the Seminoles shot a season-high .627 from the field as a team in their victory over UNLV on Monday. Florida State’s reserves (Chander Jackson, De’Ante Green, Cam’Ron Fletcher, Josh Nickelberry, and Tom House) weren’t too far behind the Seminoles’ starting five as they came off the bench and combined to shoot .625 percent from the field (10 of 16). Florida State enters Tuesday’s game against Colorado shooting .494 percent from the field in its first four games of the season.

SEMINOLES ABOVE 60 PERCENT SHOOTING IN BOTH HALVES AGAINST OF VICTORY OVER UNLV

Florida State shot .630 from the field in the first half (17 of 27) and .625 from the field in the second half (15 of 24) of its victory over UNLV on Monday night. It marked the second and third time the Seminoles have shot 60 percent or better in a half this season – they shot .606 percent (20 of 33) in the first half of their 94-67 win over Kennesaw State on November 10, 2023.

WATKINS RESPONSIBLE FOR 35 POINTS AGAINST UNLV

With 19 points and eight assists in Florida State’s victory over UNLV on Monday night, redshirt junior Jamir Watkins was responsible for 35 of Florida State’s 83 points (.422 percent). His eight assists rank as his career-high – surpassing the six assists he earned in the Seminoles’ season-opening 94-67 win over Kennesaw State in Tallahassee. Watkins enters Tuesday’s game against Colorado with 18 assists in the Seminoles’ first four games of the season – as many assists as he had in 26 games as a freshman at VCU during the 2020-21 season.

GREEN HITS THE CENTURY MARK

Senior Darin Green Jr. has made a team-leading nine 3-point shots in the first four games of the 2023-24 season and enters Monday’s game against Colorado with 100 career 3-point shots made as a Seminole. In just 36 games as a Seminole, he is ranked 25th in school history with 100 career 3-point shots made. Green needs just four 3-point shots to tie Seminole great and NBA First Round Pick Chris Singleton (2009-11) for 24th place in school history with 104 career 3 point shots made.

GREEN’S SCORING IN TWO SEASONS AS A SEMINOLE

Senior Darin Green enters Tuesday’s game against Colorado having played in a started 36 consecutive games as a Seminole. He has scored 484 points, averages 13.4 points scored per game, totaled 67 assists (1.9 apg) and 32 steals. Green is slated to start his 96th career consecutive game on Tuesday (58 at UCF and 36 at FSU) – a steak that began on February 19, 2020.
