FSU basketball sees double-digit lead slip away, loses ACC opener to UNC

Seminoles lose major lead in second half for second straight game

NCAA Basketball: Florida State at North Carolina Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

Florida State Seminoles basketball, facing off against the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill on Saturday, had the chance to pull off the team’s second upset of a Top 25 team this season.

Early in the second half, the Seminoles led the No. 18 Tar Heels by as much as 14 points, but 22-0 run by North Carolina saw FSU’s 56-48 lead with 10:28 left in the game turn into a 70-56 deficit.

FSU managed to cut it to 78-70 at the end with a three-point shot by Darin Green Jr., getting the small win of covering the spread.

It was the second straight game where Florida State experienced a second-half meltdown, having lost its previous game to the Georgia Bulldogs despite leading by 17.

A major difference, once again, was Florida State’s inabilty to keep itself out of foul trouble — the Tar Heels were 25-31 from the charity stripe (FSU was 4-8). The Seminoles’ inability to protect the paint once again was an issue, with 44% of UNC’s points coming there.

In addition to the loss, FSU forward Cam’Ron Fletcher (who missed most of last season after tearing his ACL) was helped off the court with an apparent lower-body injury.

Jamir Watkins led all Florida State scoeres with 17, also grabbing eight rebounds. De’Ante Green, Baba Miller and Darin Green Jr. all had 12 points for Florida State.

Next up for Florida State (4-3, 0-1 ACC) is a matchup against the South Florida Bulls in Sunrise.
