FSU women’s basketball stumbles at Wake Forest

The Seminoles are at a crossroads.

Jared Anderson

Florida State (5-4, 4-4 ACC) fell to Wake Forest (8-6, 5-5 ACC) tonight by a 73-59 score in Winston-Salem.

Game Recap

Florida State missed a bunch of shots while Wake Forest made a bunch of shots. Also, Wake got many more rebounds than Florida State.

Post Game

Kourtney Weber led FSU with 22 points while Valencia Myers had a very efficient 14 points on 7-9 shooting.

Wake broke an eight game losing streak against Florida State. The last time that WF beat FSU was in February of 2014.

If you have read any of my previous articles you know that I usually spend a little more time on the game recap. However, this time I really don’t think that it would be that productive an exercise. Basically Wake played really well especially on offense and FSU couldn’t keep up. The Noles managed to get good shots for the most part but they really struggled to make them and they missed several shots at the rim.

Florida State is not a big team and that has led to the rebounding issues this year. However, Wake is also not a big team. Florida State lost the rebounding battle 39-28. The Seminoles have to figure out a way to be better on the backboards or this season will go off track in a hurry.

FSU is now 1-4 on the road and the Seminoles are in the middle of a four game road swing having lost the first two games.

I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself here but FSU is now in real danger of missing the NCAA Tournament. The next two games are at North Carolina and at Miami. Both games are winnable but FSU will have to play better than they did tonight to win either one. The Noles would be in good shape for a tournament bid if they get both games. If they split they would have life but would probably need to win at least four of their final six games which would not be easy (although five of the six are at home). If they lose both games they would be in serious trouble. They would probably need to beat Syracuse on February 11th or Louisville on February 21st while taking care of business in the other games. The problem is that one of the other games is against Georgia Tech (just beat FSU 66-58) and another is against Wake.

There are several things that we could say about why the season has started to go sideways. However, the bottom line is that this is check up time for Florida State. They need to look in the mirror and challenge themselves to play better. The talent is there for a run to the tournament. The team has to commit itself to making sure that they take advantage of the opportunity. We will see if they can do it.

Next Game

Florida State will take a week off before heading to Chapel Hill for a date with North Carolina (8-5, 3-5 ACC) on February 4th. The Tar Heels are currently in the process of being blown out at Louisville. The game will tip at 6pm and will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
