No. 20 Florida State (7-3) was defeated by no. 2 UCLA (9-0) by a 95-78 score today at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT.

Game Recap

Florida State started 1-14 from the floor while UCLA started 10-15. However, the Noles ended the quarter on a 12-4 run to close the Bruin lead to 26-17 going into the second quarter.

Florida State used hot three point shooting to keep it close in the second quarter. The Noles hit five threes in the quarter but the Bruins still enjoyed a 54-40 lead going into halftime.

Despite the deficit the Seminoles kept fighting. FSU hit UCLA with a 8-0 run in the third quarter. However, UCLA responded with a 10-0 run to take a 74-55 lead and the Seminoles were never able to recover.

Post Game

Ta’Niya Latson led the Noles with 26 points. Sara Bejedi also had a strong game with 19 points.

Today’s game was the first time that these programs have ever played.

UCLA coach Cori Close was an assistant on Sue Semrau’s staff for seven years before heading to Westwood.

This is probably the best UCLA team that they have ever had. This is the highest that they have ever been ranked.

FSU stayed in the game because of hot shooting from three in second quarter and fouls from the Bruins. Florida State went to the line 18 times while UCLA only had seven free throws.

UCLA has a lot of size starting with the 6’7 Lauren Betts but they also have 6’4 Angela Dugalić in the starting lineup. It’s tough for FSU to match up with a team that features that much size. Betts is not a great rim protector but she is very effective carving out space down low. There were several times that the Bruins just tossed her the ball in the post and she got easy layups because of her size. Betts had 22 points and 18 boards and UCLA had 52 points in the paint.

Ta’Niya Latson was really aggressive. She used her quickness and athleticism to get into the paint on several occasions. She wasn’t afraid to challenge the Bruins inside even with all of their size.

Every time UCLA looked like they would blow FSU out of the building the Noles responded to keep it somewhat close. The Seminoles showed plenty of heart in this game as there was no quit in them. However, FSU is a good team and UCLA is an elite team. The elite team won today.
