Mike Norvell and the coaching staff met with the media Monday and set their sights on 2024.

Both figuratively and literally, Florida State faced the noisiest off-season anywhere in the country. In the literal sense, the football stadium and surrounding areas were demolished over the last three months to usher in a new era of FSU facilities. In a way, this also signals the new era of Florida State football.

The story of the last three months does not need to be retold. FSU faced constant ups and downs from a playoff snub, a 60-point loss, and suing their own conference that glued fans and media alike to their phones for six weeks. Of course, FSU gained a new starting quarterback, welcomed back three players who declared for the portal who decided the grass was not greener, and signed their best prep class in Mike Norvell’s tenure as coach. With this in mind, it would be easy to think about the past instead of the present. Even the head man himself stated after the Orange Bowl beatdown, “I’m always going to have feelings about that decision and how I had to see the effect it had on our players.” But today, he wanted to send a message. Coach Norvell answered multiple questions about the ACC lawsuit and the 2023 team, but his answers gave a glimpse into the mindset of this team this season.

“It’s about today. It’s about the opportunity to get better.”

“That will be one of the great teams that will be remembered. We have a great challenge ahead of us to go get better in ‘24.”

His coaching staff reiterated his message when I spoke to them during the media luncheon. Coach Atkins and Coach Surtain stated that the team moved quickly off the 2023 season, and everyone’s attention is on the task at hand. Their words did not feel like fluff; I felt the atmosphere myself. After the Seminoles were smashed in Miami, the Orange Bowl allowed media into the locker room. What I expected and what I found were two different realities. Players were down, but it did not feel like a group that would allow this loss to stick with them. It felt like a team that wanted to put everything behind them and move on. They understood that to never be in this position again, they needed to respond and prove themselves. Mike Norvell confirmed that his team had done so with one of the best Tour of Duty periods he has seen.

“This is one of the best winter programs that I’ve ever been a part of…we have a lot of returning experience that we carried over here in this new year… throughout the last eight weeks, they’ve proven that this is a place that they belong.”

Truly, it feels like the fan base feels stuck in the past more than anyone associated with the school or the team. Of course, how last season ended felt like getting hit by a 2x4. The feelings from December may never go away, or not for a while anyway. But the 2024 team deserves the support that the team before it got. This season should not be considered a referendum on whether FSU earned a postseason spot four months ago. It is about completing the climb that Mike Norvell preaches about and seeing the progression of a roster with 40% new players take the necessary steps to continue to restore FSU to where it once was. If every injury or backup quarterback results in a discussion around the Seminole snub, football games will never be enjoyable again.

With spring practice starting tomorrow, it is time to put the feelings of jealousy, hurt, and pain away. That team will always be remembered and went down as one of the best squads in school history. However, as Florida State rebuilds its infrastructure, the fan base must do the same. They need to fall back in love with a sport and a process that left them hanging out to dry. It will never be easy, given how bitter the taste is in everyone’s mouth.

Ultimately, as one story ends, another begins. The 2024 team and coaching staff need to turn down the outside noise and turn up the intensity. The fan base's encouragement will help them do that. Facing a decision that corrupt would crumple most organizations. However, as Mike Norvell said on National Signing Day, “Whether you come to Florida State or not, I know where we’re going.” After an emotional off-season, the climb will continue.

After Texas A&M fell during the week, the Seminoles were the only undefeated team left in college baseball (and unranked in some polls). Florida State took care of business against their most challenging stretch of the season to date, with a dominant victory over the rival Gators, their first in Gainesville since 2020. FSU then opened up ACC play against Link Jarrett’s former school, Notre Dame and swept the Irish to start 3-0 in ACC play. This week proved that FSU did not beat up on lesser competition to produce their record, but that Link Jarrett found a way to turn this program around.

Early on in the year, the bullpen was a non-factor as Florida State blew out their opponents. This week, the story changed. Link Jarrett needed to move Conner Whittaker back to his weekend spot due to the beginning of ACC play, which meant a bullpen game against Florida. Hudson Rowan and Brady Louck combined for seven strikeouts as the young arms got their first taste of a rivalry matchup.

Florida State went four games this week without an error as their .980 fielding percentage continues to rise. Besides two misplays during the penultimate at-bat against Florida, Link Jarrett seems ecstatic about what he sees. Against the Gators, they turned crucial double plays to end innings before the game flipped on its head. On Sunday, the former Notre Dame manager credited the victory to the men in the field for how they executed behind Conner Whittaker.

This week provided the first opportunity to see Leiter, Arnold, and Whittaker start all three games in a series, and they delivered. Leiter gave up the most runs but portrayed his usual intensity and had his best fastball command in weeks. Jamie Arnold gave up his first earned run of the season but may have pitched his best game, allowing just four hits and no walks while striking out a dozen. Conner Whittaker rounded out the trio and fit right in. He worked efficiently by generating soft contact for the majority of his outs. All three pitchers pitched into at least the sixth inning and recorded over 90 pitches as the coaching staff began to lengthen their leash. Each pitcher presents a different challenge to a lineup, and their ability to complement each other makes it almost impossible for opposing teams to put up three straight games of consistent offense.

4-0 on the week for the Noles.

Last one standing.

3 Up

Bullpen: No college baseball team has all the answers figured out about their bullpen early on in the season. However, the concerns over this group were especially strong, considering the number of transfers and the lack of a set closer. Early on in the year, the bullpen was a non-factor as Florida State blew out their opponents. This week, the story changed. Link Jarrett needed to move Conner Whittaker back to his weekend spot due to the beginning of ACC play, which meant a bullpen game against Florida. The Gator offense boasts multiple first-round picks in the MLB draft, but Micah Posey’s group did their job. Andrew Armstrong started the game on the right foot, and Carson Dorsey shut the door after a shaky fourth inning. Hudson Rowan and Brady Louck combined for seven strikeouts as the young arms got their first taste of a rivalry matchup. Although the Seminoles gave up eight runs, only three of them were earned as they did what they needed to do. Later in the weekend, Link Jarrett faced his first test in a low-scoring, high-leverage game this year, and he got the necessary outs for a victory. Andrew Armstrong pitched well on Saturday as he went over two innings without giving up a run, while Brennan Oxford finished the game off to give FSU a 4-2 victory. On Sunday, Link Jarrett let Carson Dorsey finish the final 2.1 innings in a one-run ball game as he preserved the 4-3 win. The veteran players out of the ‘pen are putting those early worries to rest and giving Link Jarrett plenty of options late in games.

Defense: The defense did not always look like this.

“Can you turn double plays, and can you make an above-average play? That is the test of a team. We were pressed today, and the guys responded well... the level of defense today was the difference in this game, and that’s plain and simple.”

Jarrett also commented on the solid play behind the plate. Both catchers caught the ball well, which could be part of why FSU racked up double-digit strikeouts in three of the four games this week. If Florida State wants to reach its potential this ceiling, playing and executing defensively must be expected. So far, the Seminoles are making the extraordinary look routine.

Rotation: Another 3 Up, 3 Down article, another tip of the cap to the rotation. By my recollection, they have been here three of the four weeks to start the season and for good measure. After his start Sunday, Conner Whittaker explained how working with Micah Posey helped improve his pitching performance.

“He’s super smart. He’s just a pro. Through the fall and early spring, I learned so much. He taught me new slider grips, how it should be, and what it should look like.”

Link Jarrett’s off-season hire has made a difference to begin the season.

Since I do not have a fourth down, it is time to discuss this group’s mentality. Whenever they find themselves behind in a ballgame, the Seminoles produce an uncanny way to respond immediately. Against Notre Dame, FSU fell behind 1-0 and then put up five runs in the first inning to push themselves out in front. On Sunday, the ‘Noles gave up runs in the third and fifth frames but scored in their bottom half of the inning, respectively, to keep the contest within reach. On Tuesday, FSU put up three runs in the sixth to blow the game open after Florida produced a five spot just two innings prior. Baseball games do not usually see-saw like Florida State’s games do, but their mentality and approach have led to serious damage at the plate.

3 Down

Leadoff spot: It felt cruel to continue to talk about DeAmez Ross here since he can mean so much for the Seminoles when he’s healthy, but he’s clearly not. On Tuesday, he went 0-5 against Florida and made a disastrous play in center field with two outs in the ninth inning. After another poor start on Friday and an apparent injury, Link Jarrett took Ross out and gave him the rest of the weekend off, while replacing him with Max Williams. The center fielder went 2-7 with one extra-base hit and one walk over the weekend. Before the injury, Ross swung at the first pitch of every at-bat on Sunday, which seemed contrary to Florida State’s style and approach to begin the season. Considering who hits behind them, FSU needs more out of this spot in the lineup. Getting runners on base for Smith and Tibbs should be Jarrett’s number 1 priority, especially how they are swinging the bat to start this year, and something needs to change next week.

Marco Dinges: The DH produced an eye-popping moment on Friday with a home run in the first inning, but he went down quietly besides that. Dinges went 2-14 on the week and finished the series against Notre Dame going 0-8. The bottom of the lineup has been a strength for FSU to start the season, but their lackluster performance against Notre Dame contributed to back-to-back four-run games against the Fighting Irish. Only Daniel Cantu recorded a hit from 5-9 in the Seminole lineup. In fairness to Dinges, he produced loud outs all weekend and hit the ball hard with nothing to show for it. But, when the one job is to get on base, and the hits dry up, questions must be asked.

ND: TBD vs FSU: RHP Conner Whittaker (2-0, 3.63 ERA)

Game recap: The ‘Noles continued their winning ways for 18 in a row to begin the season as Link Jarrett’s squad swept the manager’s former school. Florida State needed another complete effort to stay victorious with defense, timely at-bats, and another strong pitching start to carry them to the win. Conner Whittaker took the mound for the first time on a weekend and proved why Link Jarrett wanted to move him back to the Sunday spot. He gave up back-to-back homers in the third but allowed just two hits and found a way to get weak contact. He only amassed three strikeouts, but his efficient pitching allowed him to get into the seventh inning and finish the day with just 94 pitches. Of course, any pitcher needs strong defense behind him to get late into games, and the ‘Noles defense delivered. Cam Smith made multiple charging plays at third to turn infield singles into outs. The play of the game may have come from Alex Lodise in the fifth, who swiftly turned an Irish rally into an inning-ending double play to keep the lead at two.

“The defense was the difference today,” Link Jarrett stated post-game, “Our defense was sharp in all phases of it; outfield defense was really good. Cam had a couple of nice plays, and Lodise had some beautiful plays. Faurot, those double-play pivots are not easy.”

His impressive defensive work was rewarded in the bottom half of the frame as Jamie Ferrer laced one out to left for a two-run blast to tie the game at three. An inning later, Daniel Cantu scored off an error from Notre Dame, giving FSU a 4-3 lead. Florida State needed to come from behind twice, falling behind 2-0 and 3-1 before shutting the door in the later innings.

Hitting: The Noles' offense started slow by their standards, and did not blow the game open like they had done to start the season, but it did enough to get over the line. The Seminoles continued to take quality at-bats and get traffic on the bases to make life difficult for the Notre Dame pitching staff. Florida State recorded eight hits and reached base off of two errors, as they did not go down 1-2-3 until the eighth. The top of the order carried the lineup as Williams, Smith, Tibbs, and Ferrer each recorded a knock, with Smith and Ferrer hitting a home run. The bottom of the order struggled, with only Daniel Cantu putting together a multi-hit performance. The USF transfer began to find his groove this week, and he capped it off with a 3-4 day and a game-winning run. He stayed heads-up on the base paths as the Notre Dame pitcher threw away a ball he should have tucked, and Cantu advanced to third. From there, he scored on another error, which gave FSU a 4-3 lead.

“(Daniel Cantu) had a nice ball game. Some of the things he’s done at first base he makes it look easy. He had good at-bats all weekend, including today.”

The Seminoles clearly wanted to attack the Notre Dame staff early on in counts. Max Williams, FSU’s lead-off batter, swung at the first pitch on each of his at-bats. In fact, FSU only went down on strikes three times but did not draw a walk. This came as a change from the usual long at-bats they had been working in non-conference games, but with Link Jarrett knowing a fair amount about his former team, the strategy changed.

Pitching: Have a day, Conner Whittaker. Sunday marked the Sunday starter's first weekend start of the season, and he did not look out of place. Whittaker worked quickly, trading in soft contact for easy outs as he pitched 94 pitches in 6 2⁄3 innings. The pitch of the day came from the off-speed variety, as the Notre Dame batters were caught sitting on the fastball and rolling over pitches to third baseman Cam Smith. Trouble came in the third inning as Whittaker gave up back-to-back homers for the second time this season, but he responded well and only gave up two more hits the rest of his outing. Link Jarrett felt that moving the righty back to Sunday made sense instead of having him face the Florida offense during the mid-week rivalry affair, and his decision is vindicated from this start. After his start, Conner Whittaker spoke to the media about his team’s start to the season.

“It’s been real fun, and we’ve been working really hard. After last year, it means a little more to us. It’s just been fun.”

Whittaker’s final line: 6 2⁄3 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 BBs, 3 Ks

Link Jarrett only needed to go to the bullpen once and let Carson Dorsey throw the final 2.1 innings en route to the save. Dorsey did not mess around either, and just 22 pitches to finish the game off. He threw 15 strikes as he attacked the Irish batters and got them to ground out four times. Dorsey has quickly become the go-to arm out of the bullpen, and his pitching in high-leverage situations gives FSU has resulted in FSU’s first ACC sweep of the season.

Saturday: Jamie Arnold’s career day leads FSU to series win over Notre Dame.

ND: RHP Matt Bedford (1-2, 5.28 ERA) vs. FSU: LHP Jamie Arnold (4-0, 0.00 ERA)

Florida State’s offense has been the star of their early season success, but a close second is the success of the weekend duo of Cam Leiter and Jamie Arnold. Yesterday, Cam led FSU to win number 16 and today, Arnold was brilliant in the Seminole’s 17th victory, a 4-2 win over Notre Dame.

Arnold started the game out by picking up strikeout number one on the day. He allowed a single next before punching out the next two Irish. In their half of the inning, the Seminoles offense was ready to roll in as Max Williams led the inning off with a triple. Cam Smith reached after a hit by pitch and James Tibbs lined into a hit-and-run double play. The Seminoles appeared poised to blow the early opportunity until Jaime Ferrer crushed a home run over the center field fence for an early 2-0 lead. As noted by Brett Nevitt, the two-run blast gave FSU 26 runs in first innings this season.

Back to the mound, Arnold was dominant in the second inning, fanning all three batters faced. The Irish finally broke through in the third, giving Arnold his first earned run on the season. The lefty recorded another two Ks in the frame. In the fourth, Arnold ran into some trouble with two runners in scoring position, but worked out of the jam. The FSU offense picked up another two runs in the fifth. Daniel Cantu started it off with a double and quickly advanced home on a Jaxson West single. An Alex Lodise bunt single placed runners on the corners and allowed Tibbs to pick up the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.

On the mound, Arnold continued his dominance into the sixth frame where he picked up his 11th and 12th strikeouts to give him a new career high of total Ks in a game. Andrew Armstrong relieved him for the last out of the inning, recorded of course via strikeout. Arnold’s final line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 12 K. The sophomore has a season ERA of just 0.33. Armstrong cruised through the seventh but allowed a solo shot by Notre Dame in the eighth. The home run was also Armstrong’s first allowed run of the year. Army bounced back with two Ks to end the inning. Armstrong’s final line: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 4 K.

Noah Short took the mound in the ninth to retire the first batter. Short followed that up with a walk and Coach Link Jarrett turned to Brennen Oxford for the second straight day. Ox responded with a big strikeout for the second out of the inning before allowing a double to put two runners in scoring position. Ox calmly ended the game on the next batter with a foul out. It was Oxford’s third save of the year.

The Seminoles reached win number 16 with victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. FSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first inning and then hung on to secure an 8-4 win. The Seminoles are 16-0 on the season.

Notre Dame entered the matchup with 38 home runs on the year and quickly added number 39 with a solo shot to right in the first. Seminole pitcher Cam Leiter then allowed a double before picking up out number three to keep the scoring to one.

The Seminoles quickly took the lead back with a five run bottom of the frame. Cam Smith started the base parade with a hit-by-pitch, followed by a James Tibbs single. Both runners moved up on a passed ball before Jaime Ferrer drove Smith home with a single. Tibbs came home soon on a wild pitch before Drew Faurot brought Ferrer home with a double. Up next, Marco Dinges capped the inning with a two-run blast to left field. The Seminoles sent all nine runners to the plate in the first inning.

Leiter allowed only a walk in the second before FSU recorded run number six in their half of the inning. DeAmez Ross walked to start the inning and Smith advanced him to third with a single. Tibbs quickly drove Ross home with a single to right.

Both teams were scoreless in the third. Leiter cruised to start the fourth with two punch outs before Notre Dame picked up their second run with a triple and RBI single. The Seminoles threatened in the fourth and fifth but were unsuccessful in picking up another run. The Irish picked up their third and fourth runs against Leiter and the Seminoles to start the sixth. A lead off walk followed by another Notre Dame RBI triple and an RBI groundout. Leiter struck out the next two Irish to end the sixth.

The FSU offense finally got back on track in the sixth with back-to-back doubles by Smith and Tibbs to extend the lead to 7-4. Coach Link Jarrett sent Leiter back out to start the seventh, he picked up two outs but also allowed two runners to reach base. The Seminoles turned to freshman Hudson Rowan out of the pen. He promptly pegged the batter he faced to load the bases. Brennen Oxford was next up to try and stop the threat and slammed the door with a fly out to end the threat. Leiter’s final line: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 10 K.

The Seminoles were scoreless in their portion of the seventh and Oxford returned for the eighth. Ox quickly picked up the first two outs before an infield single and hit by pitch gave the Irish two base runners. FSU called Noah Short in from the pen to see if he could quell the Notre Dame rally. The West Virginia transfer had struggled in his early appearances for the Seminoles but picked up a huge K to end the top of the eighth.

Cam Smith started the bottom of the eighth with a no-doubter to right field. The solo shot pushed the lead to 8-4 for the Seminoles. Short allowed two runners in the ninth but secured the victory for Florida State.

He drank from one water fountain; whites drank from another. With the help of faith and family, Hamilton rose from those circumstances to a coaching career that has now spanned more than 50 years.
Seminoles secure first ACC win after Makenna Reid displays dominant performance

After dropping their first game of the series to No. 4 Duke on Friday, Florida State softball looked to bounce back on Saturday with Makenna Reid as the starter for the Seminoles.

Against Cassidy Curd for Duke, Jaysoni Beachum came up with a one out walk and was moved to second on a ground out. Kalei Harding dropped a double into the corner of the outfield to easily score Beachum and strike first.

Reid, now working with a lead thanks to her offense, shut the Blue Devils down in order, really gaining confidence from the defense behind her. With one out, Jahni Kerr made her full time return, laying out for a shallow fly ball to keep the threat at bay.

After Reid produced another clean inning, Lillie Walker entered for Curd to face the Seminole lineup in the 3rd. Up against her first batter, she hits Beachum to put the ‘Noles on the bases early in the inning. Harding came up with her second hit of the day, an RBI double that just got under the glove of the diving outfield.

Reid and Walker produced a quiet 4th inning, and Reid continued her stellar day in the 5th. With one out, she gave up her first hit of the afternoon on a single up the middle, just out of the reach of Torres. Despite a ground ball moving the runner into scoring position, Reid came back with her fifth strikeout of the day.

Allison Royalty closed out the game starting in the 6th, after Reid had a one hit afternoon. For her first batter, she gave up a four pitch walk. A bunt that the defense was not able to field now added another runner. The day was short for Royalty after just two batters, Coach Lonni Alameda went back to Makenna Reid.

Reid was able to retire her first batter before Claire Davison drove in an RBI off of a single. Now facing runners on the corners, a fly out traded an out for a run and Duke continued to cut into the FSU lead, 4-2. A single from Kelly Torres put herself at first and Davidson at third with two away. Luckily, Reid used her infield to get the last out and refuse Duke of another run.

Seminoles show resilience yet again, but have quiet bats in early innings

Florida State softball hosted its first ACC series of the year, as No. 4 Duke came to Tallahasse during Alumni Weekend. For game one the pitching matchup was Ashtyn Danley for the Seminoles, and Jala Wright for the Blue Devils.

In her 10th start of the season, Danley secured the first out before an error put Ana Gold on base. Following the baserunner, Claire Davidson went dead center off of Danley to put Duke up 2-0. The FSU defense got the last two outs, looking to respond in their first at bats.

Danley worked past the runs given up in the first inning and cruised through the 2nd and into the 3rd. With two outs, a single sneaked past the infield and Davidson continued her day with an RBI triple. A fly out ended the top of the inning, with a 3-0 Duke lead.

In the 4th, a one out error allowed a baserunner in Kelly Torres. An out moved her over and a single drove her in to extend the Duke lead. Down 4-0 in the bottom of the frame, Kaley Mudge broke up the no-hitter with a single. Despite getting into scoring position on a stolen base, the rest of the FSU offense could not drive her in.

Darnley's day was done after 4 innings of work. In the 5th, Mimi Gooden started the inning with a bloop single into the outfield. Another hit into the shallow outfield put two runners on with no outs. Davidson continued her day with an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Duke had two runners in scoring position after the throw home and they poured it on with two more runs. Struggling to find outs, a passed ball moved the lone runner to second base. FSU eventually got out of the inning, leaving a runner on third base, but found themselves closer to being the victim of a run rule.

After 4 innings, Duke made their own pitching change to Dani Drogemueller, a transfer from Pitt. She picked up where Wright left off with a 1-2-3 inning to start her outing.

On the first pitch of the 6th, Jada Baker sent a solo shot off of new pitcher, Emma Wilson. Wilson added two more baserunners before an out and a walk to load them for the first time. A double from Aminah Vega brought in the 9th and 10th runs to blow up the lead.

Jahni Kerr made her return in the 6th with a first pitch double against Drogemueller. A walk to Katie Dack put two runners on with no outs, as the ‘Noles looked to escape the run rule. Both Autumn Belviy and Madi Frey pinch ran as Drogemuller walked the bases loaded after a Mudge at bat.

No outs, Jaysoni Beachum reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed a run to cross, and erased Mudge. Now a 10-1 game in favor of Duke, the ‘Noles had runners on the corners for Kalei Harding. In a 1-2 count, Harding drove in another run to cut into the lead 10-2.

With FSU threatening, Duke made the switch back to Wright. Two on and one out, the ‘Noles reloaded the bases off of a Michaela Edenfield walk. Amaya Ross drove in one more run on a base hit, keeping a Seminole at every base.

Moving to a 10-3 game, Hallie Wacaser produced another run on a fly out. Ross went over to second uncontested to put two runners in scoring position. A ground out ended the inning as FSU broke the shut out, scoring four runs and evading the game ending early.

Wilson was brought back out in the 7th and did not allow a baserunner to give her offense one last chance. Devyn Flaherty recorded a hit with one out to turn over the lineup. Wright walked Mudge, as FSU continued to exercise plate discipline. The lead cut in half as Harding drove in a run on a sharp infield single.
