Callin’ Baton Rouge?

Florida State (39-21) extended its season on Sunday night pounding Georgia (45-17) by a 10-1 final score. This marks the ’Noles 17th Super Regional appearance since the format was added in 1999. The Seminoles jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings and never looked back. They are now one win shy of their 40th victory, a milestone they have achieved every season under Mike Martin.

Georgia’s outstanding pitching staff was no match for the Seminoles this weekend as Florida State’s bats stayed lit for the entirety of both matchups. Following a leadoff single from senior Mike Salvatore to start of the evening strong, Reese Albert smashed his seventh home run of the season giving the Noles an early, 2-0 lead. The ’Noles have now hit 79 home runs so far this season, the most since Florida State hit 86 in 2010.

The Seminoles couldn’t have asked for a better start from Conor Grady. The right-hander pitched seven innings, matching the longest start of his career. He wasn’t overpowering, but he did a great job mixing up his pitches against the ’Dawgs.
A win tonight sends the ’Noles to a Super Regional.

Florida State is in the driver’s seat after they throttled Georgia last night sending UGA into the loser’s bracket. The Bulldogs had an elimination game this afternoon that went about as good as they possible ask of as their Sunday started pitched a complete game shutout preserving their bullpen for tonight’s game and tomorrow if necessary.

As good as UGA’s pitching has been their three weekend guys are done. They do still have some solid bullpen arms left while FSU does not have a reliable arm outside of their closer J.C. Flowers. With the way the Seminoles have been swinging the bat I would say the advantage FSU has over UGA’s offense is greater than what UGA has of FSU’s pitching.

While everyone thought the night would be dominated by Georgia’s ace, it was actually quite the opposite. Florida State’s ace, C.J. Van Eyk, had a phenomenal night on the mound. After the sophomore allowed a home run on the second pitch of the game, his domination of the ’Dawgs commenced. Van Eyk allowed only two runs on seven hits through the first seven innings, not issuing a walk, and striking out 9. It was truly remarkable that the right-hander was able to maintain his rhythm in a game that dragged on and put him on the bench for long periods of time due to a crooked offensive score over four innings. The sophomore would finish the night scattering 9 hits across 8 innings as he induced 3 double play ground balls.

’Noles take on ’Dawgs in must win game.

Florida State smashed FAU on Friday afternoon thanks in part to a season-high 6 homeruns in a 13-7 victory. The host Bulldogs took care of business against Mercer last night after scoring 8 runs in the first inning and routing the Bears by a 13-3 score. The ’Noles are rewarded with their win by facing the best pitching prospect in college baseball in the arm of Emerson Hancock. If eligible for this year’s MLB draft taking place next week many believe he would be the first overall pick. The sophomore finished second in the SEC in ERA, has a minuscule WHIP of 0.78, allowed fewer extra-base hits (11) than games started (13) and has an impressive 5:1 strikeout to walk ratio. He was however roughed up in his last start in the SEC tournament and did miss a recent start with an injury.

The Seminoles will counter with their best starting pitcher, C.J. Van Eyk who has been excellent in the last month of the season. Spanning his past five starts the sophomore has 48 strikeouts in just 25 innings. If he can minimize his walks, 14 in the same time-frame, and rely on his ability to induce groundballs he gives FSU a chance to compete in tonight’s matchup.

This evening’s game is about as “must win” as it gets. Even with a loss the Seminoles are guaranteed at least one more game but they, nor any other team with a loss, has the pitching staff to rival Georgia’s for the remainder of the regional.

The ’Noles have a tough task ahead of them in thier quest for 40 win season.

It was 2006 the last time the Seminoles had to travel to a regional site where they were not the no. 1 seed. Fourteen years later they will play at the same site as 2006, Foley Field on the University of Georgia’s campus. The Bulldogs will host no. 2 seed Florida Atlantic, no. 3 seed Florida State, and no. 4 seed Mercer.

In addition to hosting the Georgia Bulldogs earned the no. 4 overall national seed. They have the third best RPI in the country and have been ranked in or near the top ten all ‘season. The ’Dawgs finished the regular season 44-15 with an impressive 21-9 record in SEC play. Georgia has an average offense but one of the best pitching staffs in the conference and the country.

Florida Atlantic enters the tournament with a 40-15 record and won the regular season Conference USA title by going 22-8. The Owls RPI is at 37 and made it to their conference title game before losing to Southern Miss. FAU posses a very potent offense but no starting pitchers that would be considered a shut down ace. Depending on which starting pitcher the Seminoles start on Friday this could be a very winnable game for the ‘Noles.

Like he was ahead of the conference tournament, McCormack was not shy about revealing on Monday how he’ll utilize his rotation for regionals, saying he would keep things the same. Blake Sanderson (8-2, 3.93 ERA) will start against FSU on Friday. If kept the same, Mike Ruff (6-4, 5.49) would start the Owls’ second game, but McCormack indicated the result of the first game could call for an adjustment. — Sun Sentinel

The Seminoles were one of the last four teams to make the field of 64 teams and it all came down to a win against NCST last Friday in the ACC Tournament. The 36-21 overall record didn’t impress the committee but their 17-13 conference record did. Florida State has been up and down all season and once again rely on a patient offense and can score runs in bunches. The ‘Noles will have to rely on that offense because their starting pitching, bullpen and defense have been poor most of the season outside of a few players.

Mercer made the tournament via automatic bid earned by winning their conference tournament. The Bears went 14-10 in the Southern Conference and 35-27 overall finishing with a RPI of 107 which was bolstered by their tournament championship. Like most years Mercer has a powerful lineup who can really slug it but just a marginal pitching staff.

The ’Noles will be the #3 seed in the Georgia regional.

UPDATE:

It was just announced that the Seminoles will be the no. 3 seed in the Athens regional. In their opening game they will face the no. 2 seed Florida Atlantic. The University of Georgia is the host school and no. 1 seed in the regional while having earned the no. 4 overall national seed. They will face the no. 4 seed Mercer in their first game.

Florida State will play at noon on Friday and then again on Saturday, time dependent on the outcome of their first game.

The Athens regional was paired with the LSU regional. If the ’Noles were to win the regional this weekend they would then play the winner of the Baton Rouge regional. Should the no. 1 seed LSU not win their regional Florida State would bid on an opportunity to host a Super Regional in Tallahassee.

ORIGINAL STORY:

While it is not a guarantee that the Seminoles will make the postseason most experts believe that Florida State will be one of the final teams selected today. What is guaranteed is that the ’Noles will not be hosting a regional as they were not one of the sixteen hosts sites that was announced last night. This marks only the second time FSU will not be a no. 1 seed in a regional since the format changed to a regionals were expanded to 16 sites in 1999. In 2006 they earned a no. 2 seed and went to Georgia and they also played a regional outside of Tallahassee in 2010 when the team had to travel Connecticut as a no. 1 seed.

D1Baseball’s final projections have Florida State traveling to Stillwater, as a no. 3 seed facing no. 2 seed Texas A&M. The 8th overall seed, Oklahoma State would face Army in their first game. In their final 64, Baseball America sees the Seminoles as a no. 3 seed in Baton Rouge where they would take on no. 3 seed Baylor. The host LSU team, the 14th overall seed would host McNeese State in their opener.

No matter where FSU is sent it will mark the 42nd consecutive appearance in the NCAA Baseball Tournament including 40 straight under head coach Mike Martin. The record that is in jeopardy of not being extended is 40 wins in a season which has happened in every season Mike Martin has coached. The ’Noles are 4 wins shy of 40 and it takes at minimum 3 wins to win a regional so for the streak to continue FSU would need to pull an upset wherever they are sent.

The tournament selection show begins at noon today on ESPNU. Stay tuned to TN for updated and breakdowns of teams in the Florida State’s regional
