The ’Noles offense never made the trip to Omaha.

The Florida State Seminoles (42-23) lost to the Texas Tech Red Raiders (46-19) by a score of 4-1. The season is over and the pursuit of a College World Series title that has eluded the program and Mike Martin for the past four decades has officially come to an end. It was a fantastic season that far exceeded expectations, gave “11” one more shot, and allowed the college baseball universe to celebrate his well-deserved accomplishments over his illustrious career.

Three Up

Conor Grady gave the Seminoles everything they could have possibly asked for out of their no. three starting pitching in an elimination game of the College World Series. The sophomore worked his way out of a jam in the fourth after Texas Tech singled to open the inning and Grady walked another enemy. With only one out, the Red Raiders brought in a single run one batter later to take an early lead over Florida State, 1-0. The right-hander limited the damage however and forced back-to-back groundouts with runners in scoring position. Through five innings, the Tampa native allowed five hits to just one run and struck out four while walking one. In the top of the sixth, the Red Raiders hit a solo home run and Grady’s day was done:

After Chase Haney replaced Grady in relief, the redshirt junior struck out the first two batters he faced: Josh Jung (.339) and Cameron Warren (.353). The duo leads the Red Raiders in almost every single category. Haney ended the inning by forcing a groundout. Through two innings, he allowed no runs, no hits, striking out two, and walking one.

Three Down

The anemic offense that fans saw from Florida State in the first two games of the College World Series continued tonight. The Seminoles scored just one run tonight (on a throwing error by the catcher) recorded just three singles, wasted seven base on balls and stuck out thirteen times. During the three game stretch in Omaha the offense was just 11 for 86 (.***), scored only two runs, struck out 37 times and earned nine free passes.

The frustration in Florida State’s approach at the plate after their last game was well vocalized and one would hope that the coaching staff would make the necessary adjustments heading into tonight’s win or go home situation. It was very apparent from the start the pull happy, swing for the fences mindset by the FSU offense had not changed the Seminoles consistently wasted opportunities to plate runs due to at-bats by players who were indecisive and over matched. On the night, Florida State was 0-8 with RISP and finished a paltry 0-15 in the series.

In the top of the eighth, the Seminoles needed to keep Texas Tech off the board if Florida State had any hope of pulling off the miracle. J.C. Flowers entered the game and well it went downhill from there. The Red Raiders singled stealing second during a strikeout that allowed the runner to reach first and place the baserunners on opposite corners. Another single to the right side plated another run and for whatever reason, Flowers remained on the mound and a third single loaded the bases.

One last magical run for the beloved “Eleven” has finally come to its inevitable end. An unexpected run by a team that defied the odds and fought through adversity to bring Martin back to Omaha one more time. While this team has brought fans many frustrating moments this season and nobody wanted to see it come to an end like this, the group of young men put together a phenomenal post-season performance finishing out a season to be proud of.

Can the ’Noles hold off elimination against the Red Raiders?

The Seminoles will attempt to extend their season tonight against the Red Raiders. The offense was completely absent in Monday night’s loss to Michigan and really has been for the past four games. Since the start of the LSU series Florida State batters are a combined 24 for 139 (.173) and have plated only one run in the last 26 innings dating back to game two of the Baton Rouge regional. In the ’Noles defense they have faced two outstanding starting pitchers and should consider themselves fortunate to be 1-1 after only scoring one run through the first to games of the College World Series. The FSU battery will hopefully get back on track tonight against a pitcher that they have historically fared well against.

Sometimes you’re just bad, sometimes you’re just unlucky, sometimes you’re both.

The Florida State Seminoles (42-22) fell to the Michigan Wolverines (48-20) in its second game of the College World Series by a 2-0 final score. Tonight’s loss continues the streak of the Seminoles failing to go 2-0 in Omaha since 1989.

Three up

Florida State’s bullpen did everything they could to try and keep the Seminoles in this one. Chase Haney pitched great and kept the Seminoles within reach of Michigan. In relief of Van Eyk, the right-hander, pitched 2.1 innings, struck out two, walked zero, and didn’t allow a hit. Jonah Scolaro picked up right where Haney left off striking out all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.

On a night where positives were hard to come by, Mike Salvatore had two of the ’Noles three hits.. Freshman Mat Nelson had the other hit and now has three of Florida State’s eight hits through two games in Omaha.

The Seminoles aren’t eliminated yet and will have an opportunity to keep its championship hopes alive with a victory over Texas Tech on Wednesday.

Three Down

A solo home run in the top of the first off CJ Van Eyk’s second pitch of the game seemed to shake up the Florida State starter quite a bit and put the ’Noles behind early, 1-0. The sophomore hit 62 pitches as the Seminoles entered the top of the fourth and struggled with his fastball command. It quickly became apparent that the right-hander would not pitch deep into the game like Florida State had hoped. He lasted 4.2 innings before he was replaced by Chase Haney after reaching 106 pitches and allowed another run to put the Wolverines ahead, 2-0.

NO DOUBTER FOR FRANKLIN!

Jesse Franklin absolutely CRUSHES this ball to give the Wolverines an early lead. #CWS | @umichbaseball pic.twitter.com/8verIH96uC
— NCAA Baseball (@NCAACWS) June 17, 2019

Florida State’s offense struggled to produce through the first four innings, opposing pitcher Tommy Henry, threw only 46 pitches. It wasn’t much better the remainder of the game as the left-hander finished with just 100 pitches in a complete game shutout. There is nothing wrong with the aggressive mentality by FSU hitters, but the issue was with the approach. The ’Noles consistently tried to pull pitches on the outer half of the plate instead of driving them to the opposite field, the latter approach worked extremely well for the Wolverines against Van Eyk. Since the start of the LSU series, Florida State batters are a combined 24 for 139 (.173) and have plated only one run in the last 26 innings.

While the execution by the players tonight was not great the coaching staff bears some responsibility too. The plate approach has to be better for Florida State if they are going to advance further in this series, they cannot continue to try and pull pitches in an attempt to hit the ball out of one of the biggest ballparks in the country. While the bottom half of the lineup has changed from game to game, the top half has not. With a dominant left-handed pitcher on the mound tonight, Mike Martin, needed to break up the string of lefties. This could have easily been done by moving Flowers up a spot to the four hole.

With tonight’s loss, Florida State finds themselves in the elimination bracket and will face Texas Tech on Wednesday night. If they win then they would need to defeat Michigan twice to advance to the CWS finals.

Can the ’Noles win their way into the driver’s seat?

With Florida State’s win on Saturday night they accomplished a feat that hadn’t been accomplished in 20 years. For the first time since 1999, the Seminoles won their first game in Omaha, breaking an 0-5 streak. Tonight’s game features two of the last four teams to make it into the field of 64 teams, like Florida State, Michigan has beaten some difficult teams to get to Omaha. The defeated the defending national champs, Oregon State, in the Corvallis regional and the won the best of three super regional against the number one overall national seed, UCLA.

Drew Parrish was everything you could ask for and more. He threw eight scoreless innings against a potent and powerful Arkansas lineup that not only hits for average (.300, 2nd in SEC) and reaches base at a high percentage (.398, 2nd in SEC), but balances that with home run power (85, 1st in SEC) and overall slugging (.492, 1st in SEC). Arkansas has five players that have ten home runs or more, but the left-hander was able to strike out nine and only issue two walks. He was the beneficiary of some great defense behind him, but he allowed only four singles on the night until the eighth inning. Parrish performed even better on the mound tonight when the pressure was on. Following a leadoff double and a groundout that placed a runner on third, Parrish came in clutch finishing off a phenomenal pitching performance by striking out back-to-back batters to keep the Hogs scoreless and the junior even hit 93 on his 110th pitch of the night in the process.

Through eight innings, Florida State was not able to plate a run despite having a runner reach base in the first six innings. The Seminoles were just two for twelve on the night with runners on base and struck out a gaudy eleven times while walking only twice and managing just base five hits — all singles. The Arkansas pitching was as good as advertised, but for Florida State to advance they need to produce better.

The home plate umpire was absolutely atrocious. His strike zone for the Arkansas pitcher was clearly larger than the one he was giving Drew Parrish. Mike Salvatore swung through a two-strike pitch that sailed to the backstop and the umpire yelled “YEP” for some inexplicable reason which caused Salvatore to hesitate and not take first base. The umpire also stopped Drew Parrish mid pitch to grant the batter timeout. It was embarrassing that this is the best the NCAA has to offer in a College World Series.

The run for the ’Noles first ever championship begins tonight against the Hogs.

The improbable is finally here. After running through Georgia and LSU, on the road, Florida State’s run to Omaha starts this evening against a tough opponent in Arkansas. That underdog role will continue as the Razorbacks are arguably the best of the eight teams remaining and are tied for the best odds to win the CWS.

The College World Series is made up of two double-elimination brackets of four teams each. Winners of each bracket meet in a best-of-three final. Everything you need to know about the College World Series can be found at this site.

The Seminoles are on the left side of the bracket and will face the aforementioned Arkansas. The other two teams on their side of the bracket are Texas Tech, who is making their second straight CWS appearance and fourth in the past six years. The Raiders matchup with Michigan, who like FSU, was one of the last four teams in the tournament and defeated the number one overall team UCLA to advance to their first trip to Omaha since Barry Larkin led them in 1984.

After some deliberation this week Florida State will start Drew Parrish in game one just as they have done all season. Earlier today we wrote that this was the correct move for the Seminoles. The Razorbacks will counter with the 76th overall draft pick in last weeks MLB draft. Florida State hopes they can dispense with Isaiah Campbell, the junior right-hander, much like they did with Georgia’s talented prospects in the regional. If Arkansas does have a lead late in the game they feel extremely comfortable turning the ball over to their closer, Matt Cronin, who has not allowed a run in well over a month. The left-hander, also a 4th round draft pick, has a good mix of two pitches, a fastball that tops out at 95 mph and an over-the-top curveball in the mid-to-upper 70s.

It is pretty remarkable to think this Arkansas team is as productive as they when the starting lineup consists of 1 senior, 2 juniors, 4 sophomores and 2 freshmen. Of the three draft eligible players, two were taken in the first 8 rounds. Dominic Fletcher, the Hogs centerfielder and clean-up hitter was taken 75th overall and is second on the team in extra-base hits. Batters two through six in the Razorbacks lineup have combined to hit 60 homeruns this season, with 4 of the 5 batters in double digits.

An additional threat the the Seminoles need to be aware of is the base running prowess of Arkansas. With nearly 85% success the Razorbacks have stolen 80 bags this season, hopefully the left-handed Drew Parrish can neutralize that threat because freshman Mat Nelson has had his share of troubles behind the plate this year.

Florida State continues to silence the critics in route to their first CWS title in school history. If the FSU baseball team that showed up in Athens makes an appearance in Omaha tonight then you have to like their chances to pull out a win, if the Baton Rouge ’Noles come to play they might be fighting their way out of the loser’s bracket.

Which starting pitcher gives the ’Noles the best chance to win tonight?

After last Sunday’s dramatic finish that propelled the Seminoles to the College World Series, the debate about who to start game one in Omaha immediately began. Mike Martin said he considered CJ Van Eyk, this was reasonable since the right-handed sophomore has been the Seminoles most reliable pitcher all season and pretty dominant the last month and a half of the season. Drew Parrish, had allowed 8 earned runs in only 9.2 innings in his 2 postseason starts warranting the deliberation. But in the end, Martin kept status quo and named the lefty the starting pitcher in tonight’s opener.

Drew Parrish, who has opened every series for the Seminoles all year, will be tasked with facing a talented Razorback lineup. The rationale behind starting Parrish? Five of the Hogs best hitters are lefties, and lefties statistically have less success against left-handed pitchers. Arkansas, who has five hitters with double digit homeruns and four of the five hitters happen to hit from the left side. The offense has a .320/.415/.529 slash line against right-handers this season while they hit 53 points lower against southpaws.

Florida State obviously wants an arm that can combat the potency of that lineup, but is Parrish the best arm for the job? On the season against left-handed batters he has a .250 BAA and has allowed 12 extra-base hits, including 8 homeruns while recording 45 strikeouts to only 10 walks. The righty, Van Eyk, on the season against lefties has a BAA of .197 with 67 strikeouts to 26 walks and has surrendered 12 extra-base hits, but only 3 homeruns. So seeing that both of FSU’s options have fared similarly on the season is going with Parrish still the right choice given Van Eyk has been better overall?

The answer is yes and it really has nothing to do with lefty-lefty matchups. Win or lose tonight the Seminoles next opponent will have right-handed dominated lineups. Against righties this season, CJ Van Eyk, has a BAA of .256 with 53 strikeouts to 13 walks while Parrish has a .249 BAA and 71 strikeouts with 21 walks. The difference in those stats are negligible but what really separates the two is that Parrish has allowed 23 extra-base hits against right-handers, including 7 homeruns while Van Eyk has only allowed 5 homeruns and 10 extra-base hits in total. Parrish’s fly ball rate is also higher than Van Eyk’s, making him more susceptible to line-drive hits for extra bases. So holding off on the right-hander gives Florida State a better chance to win in game two, whether it be to remain undefeated or to hold off elimination.

The Seminoles take the field tonight at 7 PM EST and the game will air on ESPN.

Do you see value in this wager?

Florida State baseball isn’t getting the longest odds to win the 2019 College World Series. But it’s close. The Seminoles have steamrolled through the NCAA Tournament, winning five games, all against higher-seeded teams, without a single blemish. But they’ve still got their doubters— which has been a formula for success so far.

The latest Vegas odds out of Caesar’s Palace have the ’Noles with the second-smallest chance to dog-pile in Omaha. Fittingly, the only team with worse odds than FSU is Michigan. The Wolverines, like the Seminoles, were one of the last teams into the tourney, and made their way to Nebraska on the road as a 3-seed.

FSU has anything but an easy opener, per the handicappers in Vegas: Arkansas is a co-favorite, along with fellow Southeastern Conference school Vanderbilt. But the ’Noles have made their way to the CWS by vanquishing Georgia and LSU from the SEC— something’s gotta give.
